What Is Solana?
Published June 2025 ยท Last reviewed August 2026
Solana is a high-performance Layer 1 blockchain platform designed for decentralized applications and crypto-native projects. Founded by Anatoly Yakovenko in 2020, Solana is known for its fast transaction speeds and low fees.
Speed and Scalability
Solana can process thousands of transactions per second (TPS) with transaction costs typically under $0.01. This makes it suitable for applications requiring high throughput, such as decentralized exchanges and gaming platforms.
Proof of History
Solana uses a unique consensus mechanism called Proof of History (PoH) combined with Proof of Stake. PoH creates a historical record that proves events occurred at specific moments in time, allowing the network to process transactions more efficiently.
The Solana Ecosystem
Solana hosts a growing ecosystem of DeFi protocols, NFT marketplaces, and consumer applications. Its low fees and fast finality have attracted developers building everything from decentralized exchanges to mobile-first crypto apps.
SOL Token
SOL is the native cryptocurrency of the Solana network, used for paying transaction fees, staking, and participating in network governance.
