What Is XRP?
Published June 2025 ยท Last reviewed August 2026
XRP is a cryptocurrency created by Ripple Labs, designed primarily for fast and low-cost international payments. Unlike Bitcoin, which was created as a decentralized digital currency, XRP was designed to serve as a bridge currency for cross-border transactions.
How XRP Works
XRP transactions settle in approximately 3-5 seconds with minimal fees. The XRP Ledger uses a consensus protocol that does not rely on mining, making it more energy-efficient than Proof of Work blockchains.
Use Cases
- Cross-Border Payments: XRP can facilitate international money transfers faster and cheaper than traditional systems.
- Liquidity Provision: Financial institutions can use XRP as a bridge currency to facilitate transfers between different fiat currencies.
- Micropayments: Low transaction costs make XRP suitable for small-value transfers.
Supply
XRP has a maximum supply of 100 billion tokens, all of which were pre-created. A significant portion is held in escrow by Ripple Labs and released periodically.
