Common Crypto Mistakes Beginners Make
Published June 2025 ยท Last reviewed August 2026
The cryptocurrency market can be exciting but also unforgiving for beginners. Here are common mistakes to be aware of.
1. Investing More Than You Can Afford to Lose
Cryptocurrency is highly volatile. Never invest money you need for essential expenses, emergency funds, or debt payments.
2. Not Doing Your Own Research (DYOR)
Making investment decisions based solely on social media hype, influencer recommendations, or tips from friends can lead to poor outcomes.
3. Chasing Pumps
Buying an asset after it has already experienced a significant price increase often means buying near the top. By the time something is trending, much of the upside may already be priced in.
4. Ignoring Security
- Not using two-factor authentication on exchange accounts.
- Storing large amounts on centralized exchanges.
- Sharing private keys or seed phrases.
- Falling for phishing scams.
5. No Exit Strategy
Entering a position without knowing when or how you'll take profits often leads to holding through entire cycles and giving back gains.
6. Overtrading
Frequent trading increases transaction costs and tax complexity. Most retail traders underperform a simple buy-and-hold strategy.
7. Neglecting Taxes
Failing to track transactions and report crypto taxes can lead to penalties. Keep detailed records from the start.
8. Falling for Scams
Be skeptical of guaranteed returns, free giveaways, and "too good to be true" opportunities. If someone promises guaranteed profits, it's likely a scam.
