Hardware Wallet Basics
Published June 2025 ยท Last reviewed August 2026
A hardware wallet is a physical device that stores your cryptocurrency private keys offline. Because the keys never leave the device and are never exposed to the internet, a hardware wallet is the strongest practical protection against remote theft. For anyone holding a meaningful amount of crypto, it is the most important security upgrade available.
How a Hardware Wallet Works
When you make a transaction:
- You connect the device to your computer or phone.
- You construct the transaction on the wallet app.
- The transaction is sent to the hardware device, which signs it internally.
- The signed transaction is sent back to the network.
Your private keys never touch your internet-connected computer. Even if your computer is full of malware, the keys cannot be extracted.
Why It Matters
Online wallets and exchange accounts can be compromised through phishing, malware, SIM swaps, and hacks. A hardware wallet removes those attack surfaces for the keys it holds. Read more in the Crypto Security Guide.
Choosing a Hardware Wallet
- Buy only from the official manufacturer (e.g., Ledger, Trezor). Third-party sellers may ship pre-compromised devices.
- Initialize the device yourself. A device that arrives with a seed phrase already written down is compromised.
- Set a strong PIN and enable the optional passphrase feature for an extra layer.
Using It Safely
- Store your seed phrase offline and separate from the device.
- Verify the recipient address on the device screen before confirming.
- Keep firmware updated.
- Never enter your seed phrase into any website or app.
A Common Misunderstanding
A hardware wallet does not "store your coins." Your coins live on the blockchain. The wallet only stores the keys that control them. Lose the device, and you can restore all your funds to a new wallet using your seed phrase.
