How Blockchain Transactions Work

When you send cryptocurrency, you are not moving a file or a coin from your computer to someone else's. Instead, you are updating a shared ledger that says "address A now owns less, and address B now owns more." Understanding that process is the foundation of everything else in crypto.
The Steps of a Transaction
- You create a transfer request. Your wallet builds a message: send X amount from my address to the recipient's address.
- You sign it with your private key. This private key proves you own the funds. The signature does not reveal the key โ it only proves you hold it.
- The transaction is broadcast. It enters the network's waiting area, called the mempool.
- A validator or miner includes it in a block. They confirm the transaction is valid (correct signature, sufficient balance, no double spending).
- The block is added to the chain. The ledger is updated across the network.
- Confirmations stack up. Each new block added on top makes the transaction harder to reverse.
What "Confirmation" Means
A transaction is not final the moment it enters a block. It becomes progressively more secure as more blocks are added after it. Most exchanges wait for several confirmations before crediting a deposit โ Bitcoin typically 3โ6, Ethereum 12โ35.
Fees and Priority
Networks have limited space. When many people transact at once, users attach higher gas fees to encourage validators to prioritize their transaction. Low-fee transactions may sit in the mempool for a long time.
Why Transactions Are Irreversible
Once a transaction is buried under enough confirmations, reversing it would require re-mining the entire chain from that point forward โ practically impossible on a well-secured network. This is why you must always verify the recipient address before sending.
