How To Take Profits
Published June 2025 ยท Last reviewed August 2026
Taking profits is one of the most important yet often overlooked aspects of cryptocurrency investing. Having a clear profit-taking strategy helps remove emotion from decision-making.
Why Take Profits?
- Lock in gains: Unrealized profits aren't real until you sell.
- Risk management: Reduce exposure to potential downturns.
- Rebalancing: Maintain your desired portfolio allocation.
Common Strategies
Percentage-Based Selling
Sell a predetermined percentage of your position at specific price targets:
- Sell 25% at 2x your entry
- Sell 25% at 5x your entry
- Sell 25% at 10x your entry
- Keep 25% as a "moon bag"
Recoup Initial Investment
Sell enough to recover your original investment amount, then let the remaining position ride with "house money."
Trailing Stop
Set a percentage below the current price (e.g., 20%). If the price drops by that amount from its peak, sell. This allows you to capture more upside while protecting gains.
The Moon Bag
A moon bag is the small portion of your position you keep after taking most profits. The idea is to maintain exposure in case the asset experiences further significant growth, with minimal risk since you've already secured your principal and profits.
