Token vs Coin: What Is the Difference?
Published June 2025 ยท Last reviewed August 2026
The words "coin" and "token" are often used interchangeably, but they mean different things. Understanding the difference helps you grasp how blockchains and the assets built on them relate to each other.
What Is a Coin?
A coin is the native asset of its own blockchain. Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and Solana (SOL) are coins. Each runs on its own network and is used to pay for transactions on that network.
What Is a Token?
A token is a digital asset built on top of an existing blockchain using smart contracts. It does not have its own chain. Most tokens on Ethereum follow the ERC-20 standard, including USDC, UNI, and LINK.
Why the Difference Matters
- Coins secure and power their own networks. Their value is tied to demand for using that chain.
- Tokens depend on the host blockchain. If Ethereum goes down, ERC-20 tokens cannot be used.
- Moving a token between blockchains requires a bridge or a wrapped version of the token.
A Simple Example
ETH is a coin โ it is the native asset of Ethereum and is used to pay gas fees. USDC is a token โ it runs on Ethereum (and other chains) as a smart contract, and you need ETH to transfer it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a token become a coin? Yes. Some projects launch as tokens on another chain and later migrate to their own blockchain. This is called a mainnet swap or token migration.
Are tokens less valuable than coins? Not necessarily. Value depends on utility, demand, and tokenomics โ not on whether the asset is a coin or token.
Where do I store tokens? In a wallet that supports the host blockchain. An Ethereum wallet like MetaMask holds any ERC-20 token.
