Understanding Bitcoin Halvings
Published June 2025 ยท Last reviewed August 2026
A Bitcoin halving is a programmed event that reduces the reward miners receive for adding new blocks to the Bitcoin blockchain by 50%. This event occurs approximately every 210,000 blocks, or roughly every four years.
Halving History
| Halving | Date | Block Reward | Price at Halving | Cycle Peak | |---------|------|-------------|-----------------|------------| | 1st | Nov 2012 | 50 โ 25 BTC | ~$12 | ~$1,150 | | 2nd | Jul 2016 | 25 โ 12.5 BTC | ~$650 | ~$19,700 | | 3rd | May 2020 | 12.5 โ 6.25 BTC | ~$8,700 | ~$69,000 | | 4th | Apr 2024 | 6.25 โ 3.125 BTC | ~$64,000 | TBD |
Why Halvings Matter
Halvings reduce the rate of new Bitcoin supply creation. Basic economic theory suggests that reducing supply growth while demand remains constant or increases should put upward pressure on price.
Important Caveats
- Past performance does not guarantee future results. Each halving cycle has shown diminishing percentage returns.
- Many factors influence price beyond supply reduction, including regulation, institutional adoption, and macroeconomic conditions.
- The market has become more efficient as Bitcoin has matured, potentially reducing the impact of halvings over time.
