What Is Market Cap?
Published June 2025 ยท Last reviewed August 2026
Market capitalization (market cap) is one of the most important metrics for evaluating a cryptocurrency. It represents the total value of all coins or tokens in circulation.
How Market Cap Is Calculated
Market Cap = Current Price ร Circulating Supply
For example, if a coin is priced at $100 and has 10 million coins in circulation, its market cap would be $1 billion.
Market Cap Categories
- Large Cap (>$10B): Established cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum. Generally considered less volatile.
- Mid Cap ($1B-$10B): Growing projects with established but evolving ecosystems.
- Small Cap ($100M-$1B): Newer projects with higher growth potential but also higher risk.
- Micro Cap (<$100M): Early-stage projects with high volatility and significant risk.
Why Market Cap Matters
Market cap provides context that price alone cannot. A $1 coin with 100 billion supply has a much larger market cap than a $50,000 coin with 21 million supply. Understanding market cap helps investors evaluate whether a price target is realistic.
