What Is Self Custody?
Published June 2025 ยท Last reviewed August 2026
Self-custody means holding your own private keys and maintaining direct control over your cryptocurrency, rather than trusting a third party like an exchange to hold your assets.
"Not Your Keys, Not Your Coins"
This popular crypto phrase highlights a fundamental principle: if you don't control the private keys to your cryptocurrency, you don't truly own it. When you keep crypto on an exchange, the exchange holds the keys on your behalf.
Types of Self-Custody Wallets
- Hardware Wallets: Physical devices (like Ledger or Trezor) that store private keys offline.
- Software Wallets: Applications on your phone or computer that store keys locally.
- Paper Wallets: Physical documents with printed private keys (less common today).
Benefits
- Full Control: You are the sole owner of your assets.
- No Counterparty Risk: You're not exposed to exchange hacks, freezes, or bankruptcies.
- Privacy: No KYC requirements for wallet creation.
Responsibilities
- Seed Phrase Security: You must safely store your 12-24 word recovery phrase.
- No Password Reset: If you lose your seed phrase, your funds may be permanently inaccessible.
- Technical Knowledge: Self-custody requires understanding basic wallet operations.
