Crypto Support and Resistance
Published June 2025 ยท Last reviewed August 2026
Support and resistance are two of the most widely used concepts in technical analysis. They describe price levels where a cryptocurrency has repeatedly reversed direction. Understanding them helps you read a chart โ but they are probabilistic, not predictive.
What Is Support?
Support is a price level where buying interest has historically been strong enough to stop a decline. When price falls toward support, buyers tend to step in, creating a "floor." The more times a level holds, the more traders consider it significant.
What Is Resistance?
Resistance is the opposite: a price level where selling pressure has repeatedly stopped a rally. When price rises toward resistance, sellers tend to take profits, creating a "ceiling."
What a Breakout Means
When price pushes through a strong resistance level, that level often becomes new support. This is called a breakout. The reverse โ price falling through support โ can signal further downside.
Why These Levels Form
Support and resistance often form at round numbers, previous highs and lows, or areas where many traders placed limit orders. They reflect collective market memory and order flow.
A Simple Example
If a coin bounces off $50 three times over a month, traders call $50 a support level. If it then drops below $50 on high volume, that support "breaks" and $50 may become resistance on the way back up.
What to Watch Out For
- Levels break. Support is not a guarantee โ a "fakeout" can shake traders out before the real move.
- Crypto is volatile. Levels that look strong on one timeframe may be irrelevant on another.
- Volume matters. Breakouts on high volume are generally considered more reliable than low-volume moves.
