What Is a Breakout?
Published June 2025 ยท Last reviewed August 2026
A breakout happens when the price of a cryptocurrency moves decisively beyond a support or resistance level where it had previously been contained. Breakouts are one of the most-watched patterns in trading because they often signal the start of a larger move.
How a Breakout Forms
Price often oscillates within a range โ bouncing between support below and resistance above. When price finally pushes through resistance with conviction, traders call it a bullish breakout. When it falls through support, it is a bearish breakout.
Why Breakouts Matter
Once a level breaks, traders who were betting on the old range may exit, adding fuel to the move. A resistance level that breaks often becomes new support on a retest.
Confirmation: Why Not Every Breakout Works
Not every push beyond a level is a real breakout. A fakeout โ when price briefly breaches a level then reverses โ is common in crypto. Traders look for confirmation signals:
- Volume: Real breakouts usually happen on higher-than-average volume.
- Candle closes: A level broken on a single wick is less convincing than a candle that closes beyond it.
- Retest: Price returning to the broken level and holding confirms the breakout.
A Simple Example
A coin has tested $5 resistance five times and failed each time. On the sixth attempt, it breaks above $5 on heavy volume and the next candle closes at $5.40. Traders treat the breakout as more likely valid and watch for $5 to hold as support on a retest.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a fakeout? A false breakout โ price moves beyond a level, then immediately reverses, trapping traders who entered the breakout.
Should I buy the moment price breaks a level? Some do, but waiting for confirmation (a close beyond the level, a retest) can reduce the chance of buying a fakeout.
Do breakouts work in both directions? Yes. Bearish breakouts below support can signal the start of a downtrend.
