DEX vs CEX: What Is the Difference?

Published June 2025 · Last reviewed August 2026

There are two ways to trade cryptocurrency: on a centralized exchange (CEX) or a decentralized exchange (DEX). Each has different trade-offs around custody, convenience, fees, and risk.

What Is a CEX?

A centralized exchange is a company-run platform — like Coinbase, Kraken, or Binance — that matches buyers and sellers. You create an account, complete KYC, deposit funds, and trade. The exchange holds your assets in custody until you withdraw.

What Is a DEX?

A decentralized exchange is a set of smart contracts that lets users swap tokens directly from their own wallets, with no intermediary. Uniswap and PancakeSwap are examples. You stay in self-custody the entire time.

Key Differences

| Feature | CEX | DEX | |---|---|---| | Custody | Exchange holds your funds | You hold your funds | | Account | KYC required | No account, just a wallet | | Assets | Lists curated coins | Anyone can list a token | | Interface | Beginner-friendly | More technical | | Recovery | Support can reset password | No recovery if you lose keys | | Risk | Exchange hack or insolvency | Smart contract bug, scam tokens |

When to Use Each

  • Use a CEX to buy crypto with fiat, for beginner simplicity, and for assets only listed on regulated platforms.
  • Use a DEX for self-custody, for newer tokens not yet on CEXs, and to avoid entrusting funds to a company.

A Common Misunderstanding

"DEXs are always safer" is not true. A DEX removes exchange counterparty risk but exposes you to smart contract risk and scam tokens. A CEX removes scam-token exposure (somewhat) but introduces custodial risk. Each shifts risk, neither eliminates it.
