What Does "Buy the Dip" Mean?
Published June 2025 · Last reviewed August 2026
"Buy the dip" is one of the most common phrases in crypto. It means buying an asset after its price has dropped, on the belief that the decline is temporary and the price will recover. Like many crypto sayings, it captures a real idea — and hides real risk.
The Logic Behind It
The reasoning is straightforward: if you believe an asset is fundamentally sound, a lower price is a better entry. Buying dips is a form of dollar-cost averaging — you add to your position at a discount when others are selling.
When It Works
Buying the dip works best when the asset is in a broader uptrend and the decline is a normal pullback within that trend. Long-term investors who buy dips on established assets like Bitcoin over multiple cycles have historically been rewarded — though past results do not guarantee future ones.
When It Hurts
The danger is that "the dip" keeps dipping. In a bear market, an asset can fall 70–90% from its high. Buying every drop without a plan can mean catching a falling knife and watching the position lose far more.
A Healthier Version
Rather than buying dips reactively, many investors use a DCA strategy that buys on a schedule regardless of price. This captures the benefit of buying lower prices without trying to time exact bottoms.
A Simple Example
A coin falls 20% in a day. "Buy the dip" says: buy now at the discount. If the coin recovers, you profit. If it falls another 60%, you are underwater — and buying more without a plan compounds the loss.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is buying the dip always a good idea? No. It depends on why the price dropped. A dip caused by a project failure may never recover.
How is it different from DCA? DCA buys on a schedule regardless of price. Buying the dip is reactive — it buys specifically because price fell.
What is "catching a falling knife"? Slang for buying a plunging asset that keeps falling, hurting the buyer.
