What Is a Memecoin?
Published June 2025 ยท Last reviewed August 2026
A memecoin is a cryptocurrency whose value is driven primarily by community, internet culture, and speculation rather than by technology or utility. They are among the most volatile and risky assets in crypto โ capable of enormous gains and total losses.
What Defines a Memecoin
- Cultural origin: Often based on a meme, animal, or internet joke (Dogecoin's Shiba Inu, Pepe, etc.).
- Little intrinsic utility: Most do not power a meaningful protocol or product.
- Community-driven: Price depends on attention and social momentum.
- Often low liquidity: Small pools mean price moves extremely fast.
Why Memecoins Move So Fast
Because most memecoins have low liquidity and speculative demand, modest buying can send the price soaring, and modest selling can collapse it. A single viral post can move a memecoin by hundreds of percent in hours. This cuts both ways.
How Memecoin Market Caps Work
A low unit price can make a memecoin look "cheap," but market cap is what matters. A memecoin at $0.00001 with a supply of 100 trillion has a $1 billion market cap. Hitting "just $1" would require a market cap of $100 trillion โ more than the entire stock market. Use the Memecoin Upside Calculator and Market Cap to Price Calculator to check realistic targets.
The Risks
- Extreme volatility: Gains and losses of 90%+ in short periods.
- Rug pulls and scams: Many memecoins are created to exploit hype. See rug pulls and pump and dumps.
- No fundamental floor: Unlike a productive asset, a memecoin can fall to near zero if attention leaves.
- Liquidity traps: You may not be able to exit a large position without crashing the price.
A Common Misunderstanding
"I'll get in early and it'll go to $1" ignores market cap. A memecoin's realistic ceiling is limited by the total market cap the sector can support. Most memecoins never reach a fraction of the prices hopeful holders project.
