What Is FOMO?
Published June 2025 · Last reviewed August 2026
FOMO stands for Fear Of Missing Out. In crypto, it describes the anxiety of watching an asset rocket upward and rushing to buy because it feels like everyone else is getting rich. FOMO is one of the most powerful — and dangerous — forces in a volatile market.
How FOMO Drives Behavior
When an asset is rising fast, social media lights up with screenshots of gains. People who were on the sidelines feel they are missing a life-changing opportunity and buy in — often near the top, after most of the move has happened.
Why FOMO Is Dangerous
- Buying near tops: By the time everyone is talking about a coin, much of the upside is often priced in.
- No plan: FOMO purchases are emotional, not strategic. There is no entry thesis, exit plan, or risk management.
- Chasing pumps: Buying a pump and dump late often means buying from the people who started it.
How to Resist FOMO
- Decide your strategy and position sizes before excitement hits.
- Use DCA so you invest on a schedule rather than chasing spikes.
- Accept that you will miss most moves. Missing gains is normal; losing capital is not.
- Ask: would I buy this at this price if no one were talking about it?
A Simple Example
A coin rises 200% in three days. Headlines and tweets celebrate it. A FOMO buyer enters near the top. The coin falls 60% the next week. The original buyers take profits; the FOMO buyer holds a large loss.
