What Is HODL?
Published June 2025 · Last reviewed August 2026
HODL is one of the oldest and most famous terms in crypto. It began as a typo and became an investing philosophy: hold onto your cryptocurrency through volatility rather than selling in reaction to price swings.
The Origin
In December 2013, during a steep Bitcoin crash, a user on a Bitcoin forum posted a rant titled "I AM HODLING" — misspelling "holding." The typo caught on, and the community backronymed it as "Hold On for Dear Life." A meme became a mindset.
What HODLing Means
To HODL is to buy cryptocurrency and refuse to sell during downturns, based on a long-term conviction in the asset. Rather than trading in and out, a HODLer holds through bull and bear markets, believing the asset will be worth more over a multi-year horizon.
The Logic Behind It
- Avoiding emotional mistakes: Selling at the bottom and buying back higher is a common way investors lose.
- Time in the market vs timing the market: Long-term holders bet that being invested over years beats guessing tops and bottoms.
- Tax efficiency: Long-term holding often triggers fewer taxable events than active trading.
When HODLing Is Tested
HODLing is easy in a bull market and painful in a bear market. Coins can fall 80–95%, and some never recover. HODL works best as a strategy for assets an investor has researched and believes in long-term — not as blind holding of anything that drops.
A Simple Example
An investor buys Bitcoin at $30,000. It falls to $16,000, then later rises to $60,000. A trader who panicked and sold at $16,000 locked in a loss. A HODLer who held through the drawdown captured the recovery.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is HODL the same as holding? In practice, yes. HODL specifically implies holding through volatility with conviction.
Should everyone HODL? No strategy fits everyone. HODLing requires believing in the asset long-term and being able to withstand large drawdowns.
Is HODLing risk-free? No. An asset that falls and never recovers will lose a HODLer everything. Diversification and position sizing still matter.
