Bridging Crypto Between Networks
Published June 2025 ยท Last reviewed August 2026
Different blockchains cannot natively talk to each other. A token on Ethereum cannot be used directly on Solana. A bridge solves this by connecting two networks so assets can move between them โ but bridging carries unique risks worth understanding.
How a Bridge Works
When you bridge a token from chain A to chain B:
- The bridge locks (or burns) your token on chain A.
- It mints (or releases) an equivalent representation of that token on chain B.
- When you bridge back, the process reverses โ the chain B version is burned and the original is unlocked.
The bridged token on chain B is a "wrapped" or synthetic version that is only as good as the bridge that backs it.
Why Bridges Are Used
- To access applications on another blockchain.
- To trade tokens only available on a specific chain.
- To take advantage of lower fees on a Layer 2 or alternative network.
The Risks
- Smart contract risk: Bridges hold large amounts of locked value and have been among the most exploited targets in crypto. Major bridge hacks have caused billions in losses.
- Wrapped token risk: Your bridged token depends on the bridge staying solvent and functional. If the bridge fails, the wrapped token can become worthless.
- Time and fees: Bridging can take minutes to days and incur multiple fees.
- Liquidity: Some bridge routes have low liquidity or high slippage.
Safer Practices
- Use well-established, audited bridges.
- Bridge only what you need, not your entire holdings at once.
- Double-check destination network and address before confirming.
- Prefer native assets where possible โ some chains have native versions of popular tokens that avoid bridging entirely.
A Simple Example
You want to use an app on Arbitrum but your ETH is on Ethereum mainnet. You bridge ETH to Arbitrum: the bridge locks your ETH on mainnet and mints equivalent ETH on Arbitrum. You can now use it there. Bridging back unlocks the original.
